The Slave

In early 2010 the People’s History Museum re-opened after a £12.5million redevelopment project.  The Edwardian Pump House has been restored to show its former life as a hydraulic pumping station more clearly and is now joined by a spectacular new four-storey extension clad in Corten, an unusual rusty material.  There are new and bigger galleries where visitors can join a march through time following Britain’s struggle for democracy over two centuries.  There have always been ideas worth fighting for.  Also visit our changing exhibition gallery, community gallery, shop and cafe with riverside terrace.  The archive and study centre is available to visit by appointment.  For more information please visit our website, www.phm.org.uk

The museum’s collections relating to slavery include political cartoons, prints and tokens from the 1700s and 1800s. Later material covers slavery's legacy and its effects on the lives of working people in Britain. The campaigns for the abolition of slavery and wider social reform had a degree of synergy in the 1800s.
