Details

At the time of the American Civil War 70% of the raw material fuelling Britain's Industrial Revolution was slave-grown cotton from the southern states of America. 16% of all Britain's jobs depended upon the cotton trade.

The pride felt in Rochdale in supporting the abolition of slavery in spite of the great dependency on slave-grown cotton is described.
