The post emancipation and period of indentured labour from Asia in the Caribbean is described.

The early black presence in Oldham in the 1700s from the records was surprising and over time the status of enslaved in Britain was challenged.

The experience of the former enslaved African American, James Johnson who settled in Oldham, is presented.
