Mill Worker
A worker from one of the many cotton mills in and around Greater Manchester. In the 1850s there were 108 mills in Manchester – the main form of employment.
Working conditions were poor and child labour was common. Greater Manchester depended on slave-grown cotton from the USA to keep its textile industries running.
